The financial downturn that we are all experiencing still shows no sign of relenting. While we all look to make our pounds last a little bit longer, we look at some apps that might help save you a few quid.
Free phone calls and messages
Providing you have a data plan on your mobile phone contract or wi-fi coverage, the following are apps worth considering as they offer the ability to make phone calls and text messages for free.
Viber
Viber is an app that works on iPhone, Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry devices and enables free calls to anyone else that has the app installed.
“When you use Viber, calls and text messages to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call or text any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free. All Viber features are 100% FREE and do not require any additional "in application" purchase.”
Tu Me
Tu Me is new to the app scene, currently only available on iOS devices. It offers free VoIP calling, integrated text and audio messaging as well as photo and location sharing. The app also presents the user with a timeline of all of their correspondence which is a nice touch.
What's App
What's App has been a huge success and offers a great alternative to iMessage, BB Messenger and Google Talk as it works cross platform.
All of the above are a great alternative to using expensive calling and text plans. They are also a great solution for communicating with friends and family abroad.
Keeping Track Of Your Finances
Saver
There are many apps which offer basic accounting functionality, but my favourite by a long way is saver. The app is beautifully designed and lets you enter any expense with a simple tagging system. The app lets you assign yourself monthly targets and shows a graphical breakdown of your expenses. It's a really nice way of seeing where all those unaccounted pennies actually go.
Money Savers
Amazon price check
The Amazon price check app is a simple tool that enables you to scan a products barcode in store and see if that 'amazing deal' really is as good as it sounds or if it is, infact, cheaper online with Amazon.
billr
Ever had to share the cost of a meal with a group of friends and ended up paying more than you should due to their expensive tastes? Enter billr.
Billr is the quickest way to split the bill and even calculate the tip! Some nice features include:
- Pick your party size - up to 16 people!
- List the cost of each dish
- Set the tax and tip amounts
- Show each person what they owe on your phone
- Or send them a copy of the split bill by text message or email
The app is beautifully designed and takes the pain from those awkward sums, which are always trickier after a few glasses of wine!
