Pictify: It's Pinterest For Art Lovers

Installation Posts on Pictify

Just ten minutes ago, I received an email from the Saatchi Gallery letting me know about this great new site called Pictify. It's a site for art lovers, artists and galleries to share the art they love as well as discovering new art. Great! But it looked so much like Pinterest that I had to investigate.

Pictify's homepage, much like Pinterest, is made up of good old-fashioned 'posts' rather than pins. These can be filtered by categories such as digital art, installations, paintings or photography. Users can like, comment and share the posts.

Again just like Pinterest, users can set up a profile and upload their own posts to share. You don't need an invite and the sign up process is very straightforward.

Once signed up you can start following like-minded people and get straight to posting your favourite paintings into 'albums'. You can upload an image from your desktop, use a URL, a video or search images via Google.

Four options for users to source their content from: desktop, a link, a video or by searching Google.

Interestingly, the Saatchi Gallery explained in their email that they are doing a preview of one of their exhibitions on the site which opened yesterday:

Through PICTIFY, galleries and museums will also be sharing works in their exhibitions and collections. The PICTIFY team invited us and some other galleries to upload works from our shows during its development phase, which we’ve done, and we are also previewing our upcoming photography show Out of Focus on PICTIFY which opens on 25 April.”

Although the site is a complete clone of Pinterest, I think beacuse it is so niche and has the potential to get more galleries on board, it could actually become quite successful.

What do you think their business model is? Will they eventually charge galleries and museums to showcase their art once they build up enough traffic?

It's hard to know what they have planned - charging galleries and museums would be one way to create revenue. For now, I imagine their aim is to encourage these galleries, museums and artists to join Pictify in order to draw in and create an active and engaged community. Only then can they start to think about monetising the space through placing ads, using promoted posts and possibly charging to showcase art.

I just discovered Pictify but have mixed feelings about it - there seem to be plenty of posts of act sketches not even paintings (from Russia?) that seem to get pushed to the top by fake comments. :-(
