Tesco Launch Interactive Virtual Grocery Store

The Barcode Scanner on the app

Last year Tesco opened the world's first virtual store in South Korea, and this month sees the opening of their first UK based virtual store at Gatwick Airport. Ten screens have been set up for a two week trial period for the service.

Users are invited to download the Tesco app to use the online store and order goods by scanning barcodes on the screen and adding them to their basket. Once they have finished their shop, they head to the online checkout and arrange delivery for up to three weeks in the future.

Mandy Minichiello, Senior Marketing Manager for Tesco.com, explained that the service was thought up as a result of talking to customers and hearing how more and more of them are keen to shop on the go. In addition she also says:

On average, you have about 70 minutes when you're through check in - that's dead time. Now it can be put to really good efficient use”

Check out the video from the launch below and let us know your thoughts - do you think it's a useful service or do you think it's taking shopping on the go a little too far? Would you use the service?
