Do you want to loose track of your day? Fancy wondering where those lost hours went? Well start using Thumb - an app tipped for big things in 2012. This week Thumb was named Best Social Networking App on Android in 2011 at the Best Ever App Awards - it is also available on iPhone and online.
Originally named 'Opinionaided', Thumb came out of Beta mode in June 2010 and last year raised $1million in funding from various donators. This led to the app being renamed as Thumb in December 2011. No real reason was given aside from the name Thumb grew on the app creators - Kurani Interactive.
That's the backstory, but what exactly is Thumb and why should I care?
Thumb lets users post a question with a photo that other users can then respond to. Users can either give a thumbs up or down or stay neutral and are also able to leave a comment. Questions can be posted to everyone or just to friends, and users can start conversations with other users through commenting on questions.
Once a user gives a thumbs up or down or stay neutral, they can see the percentage results from other users. Questions can be sorted into different categories. So if you only want to answer questions on pets or on apps you can. Say you choose appearances, you may get a question asking 'is my friend hot?' - percentage results could reveal that 63% of people think their mate isn't hot. Personally I find the relationships and appearances categories have the funniest questions and photos. I'm not quite so sinister, but I can see this great for some people who just want to leave those sorts of comments.
Users who comment lots then have the opportunity to be a top advisor - a nice touch to increase the user longitivity and attention spans.
You may just want to view lots of pet photos (just select pet category) or talk about the latest mobile apps (just select the apps and technology category) and that is what's so great about this app - it can appeal to so many tastes and user personalities. Each user can get an experience tailored to them.
The creators stated in a recent blog post there will be a greater social integration this year. It will be exciting to see what they have planned.
As mentioned, Thumb has a lot of investment put into it and recently relaunched with a new name. Momentum is growing and it recently made 'CNN's Top 50 Tech Tools You May Have Missed' list. Thumb is part of a growing trend of Q&A services facing competition from the likes of ChaCha and Mahalo. I think giving and receiving feedback on questions relevant to users in real time, from strangers or friends can continue to grow and grow.
